Konjit Avent

The Dunham Advocate

Konjit Avent is an East Saint Louis, Illinois native and member of the East Saint Louis Arts and Culture Coalition. In 2014, she answered the call of the Katherine Dunham Museum in raising funding to assist with the museums operational expenses. This opportunity to help her community evolved into volunteering, organizing museum tours, and a return to academia to pursue a masters degree in anthropology/museum studies.

This project is juxtaposed to her work in the arts. She has worked with metro-east art collectives, creatives and has written content for cultural publications. Her quest has to been to increase the awareness of Dunham’s intergenerational work and influence as a creative and educator while advocating for African American local and regional history.
